Toxoplasmosis is due to an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite called Toxoplasma gondii and is very prevalent in humans (in some countries, more than 50% of the population is infected). Toxoplasmosis is generally very mild in the immunocompetent host, but it can be severe in fetuses in cases of congenital infection, as well as in immunosuppressed patients.Toxoplasmosis is asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic in more than 80% of cases. Diagnosis of acute infection is mainly based on serological testing prescribed in the following clinical situations:

IgG is widely used to determine the presence of specific immunity.
If IgM appears earlier than IgG, it also disappears earlier. This makes IgM an early and sensitive marker of acute infection.
Serology is not always clear-cut. Reactivation, reinfection, polyclonal stimulation, residual IgM andnon-specific IgM can lead to unnecessary treatment, amniocentesis, abortion and distress.

"Vidas avidity exhibited better performance than Architect avidity" "Vidas […] displayed excellent performance for IgG and IgM detection" "The Vidas system adequately detects toxoplasmosis in pregnant women and newborns. This system fits the needs of laboratories working on small routine series for first-line testing as well as expert laboratories, due to a high specificity and a powerful avidity test. […] The Vidas system provides better Se (sensitivity) in screening for both IgG and IgM in pregnant women than the Liaison and Architect assays." |
